Course structure

The Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) Course at Turin Flying Academy is designed for qualified pilots who want to obtain the authorisation to teach instrument flight (IFR). With this certificate, you’ll be able to provide training for the issue, renewal, or revalidation of IR privileges – limited to the aircraft class for which you are already qualified. Training combines theory and practice using certified IFR aircraft and an FNPT II simulator, ensuring a comprehensive and professional learning experience.

The total course duration depends on student availability.

Ground School

Ground school

  • 25 hours*
    (Teaching and learning)
    * Not required if you already hold an instructor rating
  • 10 hours
    (Technical study of IFR procedures)
  • 1 - 2 months
  • 1 written exam
    (multiple choice, in English)
Flight Training

Flight training

  • 10 flight hours
  • 1 - 2 months
  • 1 final skills test

Flight activities include:

  • 10 hours IFR training in aircraft or simulator (only 5 hours if you are already an FI)
  • Final flight test with full briefing and debriefing conducted by the trainee instructor
